i am working with the chapel hill-carrboro esl program. although i have yet to volunteer, i nonetheless have high expectations and look forward to working alongside with them. i have however previously worked with the the human rights center in abbey court. this past summer myself and another guy my age worked with pluto and started what was called the gentlemen's social. we set up tables and brought refreshments once a week and played dominos with the residents of abbey court.
after several weeks of doing this we saw how the mexicans were mistreated. the first few weeks they were reluctant to come and play because we were strangers to them and they felt we couldnt be trusted, but pluto would talk to them and assure them that we were only there to have fun. they began opening up to us and told us how difficult it was to find work and when they did there was still a fear they wouldnt be paid. this fear was becasue many of them were here illegally and and if they werent paid, they couldnt complain to anyone with any authority because they would find out they were here illegally and more than likely send them back to mexico. it is unfortunate, but thanks to judith, rafael, and pluto they now have someone they can turn to.
