Journal 1- Gavin Petracca

Think about the group or population that your APPLES organization is serving. Do you think that mainstream society defines this group in a way that is simplistic or homogenous? Is this a negative or positive stereotype? Have your recent encounters with members of this group changed the way that you define or “see” that group? How so?

This semester i will be working with the Chapel Hill Human Rights center. I have done work with the campus-y (with Judith) before and am looking forward to working with the CH-HRI.

I feel that society definitely defines Latin-Americans, many of the stereotypes include cheep workers and people that will do any type of job to make money. Another stereotype that is often looked upon Latin-Americans is that they are often times illegal immigrants. These are unfortunate ways to look at people who are trying to better their lives in a society where all of us "Americans" at once were immigrants. Most of the professions that many of these people are put into are not ones of glamour but are ones that are necessary in order for them to feed their families. I look forward to helping these people and giving them a place to relax and enjoy themselves.
