I'm Yasmeen, and I am signed up to volunteer at Heirs to a Fighting Tradition, a social justice organization in NC. In my volunteering, I won't specifically be working with any certain group of people, instead I will be aiding in curriculum development, fundraising and outreach mostly from home. I am excited to work with Heirs because the organization seems to be a strong local community that strives to protect rights of locals as well as share knowledge and record history to compel social activism in the future. Thinking of the question Jordan asked, I think mainstream society has a common stereotype for social activists, "peace-loving hippies." While this is not necessarily a threatening judgement, it is not accurate and undermines the work that activists do. Being somewhat of a social activist myself, my interactions with that community have always been positive and thought-provoking. I have always held activists at a high level and I hope to continue to respect and admire their work as I volunteer with more members in the Heirs organization.
