Initially, my APPLES assignment was working in a Pre-K, Head Start program; however, the teacher who I was supposed to help ended up with more help than she needed. Now, I'm going to be volunteering with the Orange County Rape Crisis Center. The survivors are often characterized as either helpless or that they "brought it on themselves (why was she out at night by herself, why was she wearing that, etc.)." This is absolutely a negative stereotype. The survivors who I will work with are courageous, especially in light that rape is the most underreported crime in the US. I have not been able to volunteer at the OCRCC as of yet, but I believe that the work I will do this semester will be extremely eye-opening.
