Latosha Phillips
My volunteer project is with the Spanish School Reading partners. I have yet to have the opportunity to volunteer, but I'm aware of a host of stereotypes that go along with this group of people. What I have been able to observe from working retail is the importance of Spanish Speaking children knowledge of English and Spanish. A lot of times these children are translators for the adults in their household. Therefore, I think that my service project is very important because not only am I increasing their communication skills in society, I'm also helping their parents as well. Student's whose first language is English often struggle with reading; I can only imagine the difficulties of those with English as their second language.
